Dovestone Reservoir

Dovestone Reservoir

A wonderful place on our doorstep.

Who would have thought there is a beautiful, magical place right on our doorstep!

The advantage of living in Greater Manchester is that we are very close to Peak District and it’s scenery views.

If you fancy a moderate walk in the nature I highly recommend Dovestone Reservoir. Situated on the edge of Oldham and the Peak District National Park, Dovestone Reservoir is a spectacular area popular with visitors and for family days out. The car park near the reservoir is very busy all the time and it’s pay and display so better to start your walk early in the morning.

You can also enjoy going out for a run or cycling and if you want to get more adventuress take the route alongside the Greenfield Brook river. The route is difficult with rocks and wet terrain but it’s worth it as the views from the top are breath taking.

Once you pass Greenfield Waterfall, the route is getting easier but the wind starts to increase.

When you get to the top above the reservoir take a deep breath in and enjoy the views. This place made me feel happier, relaxed and calm.

Dovestone Reservoir

Even though it was a rainy morning, the rest of the day was windy but sunny, typical English weather. The route was around 11 miles and it took around 6 hours to complete, including pit stops and lunchbreak.

We really enjoyed this hike and not even we discovered our neighbourhood landscape but we also made great memories.

The route looks completely different on a winter day. We went back to Dovestone Reservoir and tried to go along the waterfall but it was very slippery and we had to cut short the hike and turned back to the car park.

Looking forward to going back to this lovely place and enjoy it’s scenary.

We ‘Hike and Travel’ really love going outside and there are many nice walks at Dovestone Reservoir. We went on a winter day to see if we can climb the waterfall.

As it was snowy and colder than previously, the terrain was not that slippery and we managed to climb the waterfall. It was a little bit difficult, using my arms and sometimes I was on my knees to climb on higher rocks.

I would suggest if you ever go on a winter day to have adequate boots and weatherproof clothes and be careful as the snow hides the holes or muddy areas.

Once we got to the top the wind so stronger. Gusty winds were so powerful as I was barely kept my balance and needed to stop or get lower to not fall.

Where it is snow there is also a lot of fun. I was so happy to be able to enjoy the snow, remembering how much fun we were having when we were kids. It is also good to keep your inner child alive. Watch the short video below , does it bring some fun days memory?

Summer vs Winter

I do like summer walks but I also enjoy walking on a winter clear day.

What do you prefer, summer or winter views?
