Four Waterfalls

South Wales

We really like waterfalls and the Four Waterfalls in South Wales is the perfect scenic route. This circular walk through ‘Waterfall Country’ in the Brecon Beacons visits four stunning falls set in beautiful woodlands.

We visited Brecon Beacon awhile ago, hiking the highest peak in South Wales, Pen Y Fan and camping in a Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Rhandirmwyn.

The route starts from a National Trust car park (Four Waterfalls Car Park) where you find facilities and pay and display cash only with limited spaces.

The Four Waterfalls route is along Afon Hepste River, just few miles away from Penderyn. As its name suggests, this circular walk lets you discover the four falls of Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd-yr-Eira. All different and unique in their own way, these cascades along the river enchant and delight with their roaring sounds and tumbling waters. The route can get very busy, buzzing with tourist during a summer day, popular for walking or water sports like gorge walking.

The first waterfall, Sgwd Clun-Gwyn is located just few miles away from the car park. The path through the woodlands is accessible but it can be slippery on a rainy day.

We reached at the top of the waterfall where a group of people started to prepare for their adventure gorge walking.

The views and the fresh air are perfect combination for a relaxing walk. When we went down we realised how small we are compared with this magnificent nature waterfall. The rocks near the water are very slippery covered with green moss so don’t adventure if you don’t have suitable footwear.

We have spent few minutes enjoying the beautiful views and nature. I was really impressed how powerful the water can be, creating it’s own path no matter what was in front, rocks or wood.

If you are looking for an exciting adventure, full of adrenaline you can choose to go gorge walking which includes walking, climbing, waterfall jumps and swimming with a trained instructor.

The next waterfall was few minutes away so we started to walk along the river, guided by the next waterfall roaring sound. It was a sunny, warm day and walking by the water really helped to cool down.

The Brecon Beacon and South Wales have a lot to offer, from spectacular waterfalls, walking path through the woodland, cosy small villages and scenic walks to higher peaks.

During my research about the area, looking what should we visit on our lovely holiday in South Wales, I read that at one of the waterfalls you can go behind it. I was so excited and intrigued how can you go behind it but I never image it will be so beautiful; the picture doesn’t do it justice.

The waterfall is even more impressive than I thought. You can go behind the waterfall, but be careful as it is wet and slippery.

We always have our waterproof Mountain Equipment jacket with us and it was very useful as otherwise we were soaking wet.

The entire route is about 5.3 miles and approximate 3,5 hours as we’ve spent some time taking pictures and enjoying the views.

The only downside in Brecon Beacon is that you don’t have phone reception everywhere so it might be useful to load your maps on your phone/ watch or take a map with you just in case.

After this nice walk we went back to the campsite and cooked our meal but there are plenty of good local pubs nearby where you can have a nice meal.
