Old Man of Coniston

The Old Man of Coniston

One of the good things this year is that we have started to spend more time outdoors either hiking or walking. One of our first trip in Lake District was The Old Man of Coniston.

We have parked at Old Station car park and started our hiking early in the morning from The Sun, an stunning 17th century inn. The payment can be done in cash and it costs £7/ day.

The Sun

The route was the hardest we’ve done so far and it was definitely worth it. This included Tilberthwaite, Old Man of Coniston, Levers Hawse, Swirl How and Wetherlam. When we have reached to the top of Old Man of Coniston, the wind was started to blow stronger and the clouds were reducing the visibility for few minutes. After the sky has cleared, the view from there was breath taking. You can see from there the highest Scafell Pike, Coniston lake and Irish sea.

If you want to do this hiking route I would recommend to have proper hiking shoes which support your ankle as almost 90% of the route is rocky and quite challenging. Also, don’t forget to take food high in carbs and calories as you will need a lot of energy.

The last part of the route when we started to descend, it took awhile to get down on the very steep versant with a very rocky path. It took around 8h to complete the trail including lunch break and other pit stops.

Old Man of Coniston

After a hard way to the top of the mountain when you see the view the feeling is uplifting. The achievement makes you feel more confident and accomplished. Hiking on Old Man of Coniston was a great way to overcome my fear of heights, a good exercise and an amazing day to enjoy the nature and it’s views.
