December 2016

When in Rome

In December 2016 we have decided to celebrate Christmas in Rome, first time away from our families. We travelled by Ryanair on 24th of December and stayed 3 nights at a great NH Collection Hotel, very close to all tourist attractions. The hotel room was very clean and spacious, great cooked and continental breakfast with a big variety of pastries.

As we only had few days to visit Rome, we planned every day activity and bought tickets online as otherwise you need to wait in a long queue.

First night it Rome was magical, we went for a walk and visited the Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain (not that romantic as described in movies) and finished with dinner in a small local restaurant.

At the time we visited Rome I was on a Keto diet and couldn’t eat carbs but this restaurant, I found it more romantic than Trevi fountain and offered a great variety of comfort, tasty good food. The atmosphere made you feel like you’re in When in Rome type of movie, away from tourist areas quiet and cosy.

We were ready for a busy scheduled day when we had to wake up early in the morning to visit the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

The view and history of Colosseum is impressive. We can now tick off one of our bucket list items.

We bought the tickets online for both Colosseum and Roman Forum but you have to be there at certain time. These are not something you can miss.

Learning at school about romans, how to fought with dacians and their culture and traditions, I was grateful to be there and for a second think about my ancestors.

Trajan’s column commemorates Roman emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars.

It’s even more beautiful than in my eight grade history book.

Looking at the scenes on the column it got me thinking, am I roman or dacian?

Next stop was the Vatican, the smallest country in the world. It is really small as you can walk around it in just around one hours.

Even if it’s very small when you walk around and inside the buildings everything looks so big, bigger than you. When we entered in the Sistine Caple, I felt like a shiver, being so impressed and overwhelmed by the beautiful paintings. Seeing Michelangelo’s work so vivid and expressive simply leaves me astounded. You are not allowed to take pictures in the chapel but I will remember the feeling and I would definitely like to go back and see it again.
