Bamford Edge is an overhang of gritstone rock that sticks out north of the village of Bamford, Hope Valley, in Derbyshire.

The walking route starts from an off road car park above Bamford village on New Road. We usually want to do the hardest part first so if there is a hill to ascent to do that first and leave the easiest part at the end when we don’t have that much energy. Albeit, this time we started with the easy part first.

The first leg of the route was a walk down to Bamford village. Bamford is a village in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England, close to the River Derwent. To the north-east is Bamford Edge, and to the north-west the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden Reservoirs.

After few minutes we reached to Bamford Mill. From 1782, a water powered corn mill was built here by a local farmer and miller, Christopher Kirk. This only lasted a few years until destroyed by fire in 1791. It was rebuilt as a cotton mill, still powered by water. In the early 19th century it converted to steam power, with a 60 horsepower (45 kW) beam engine.

The river and the scenery around the mill are amazing. It was a lovely surprise to see this amazing place full of historical value.

Along this walking route there are several clay sculptures like the one below, very colourful and vivid which illustrates local people and their activities.

The next leg of the route between Bamford and Ladybower Reservoir is a long, straight path through the woodland.

This path is very nice for running or cycling, but on foot seamed a long way to go.

Close to Ladybower reservoir we have discovered a lovely waterfall upstream the river. It was so nice to take a breath in and enjoy the moment, listening to birds singing and the sound of water rushing through the stones.

Once we reached to Ladybower Reservoir, the sun was warming up the ground and our faces and the view towards Bamford Edge was spectacular. It’s a shame we can’t really transmit the amazing feeling we had via the pictures.

Ladybower Reservoir

So we have started from the car park, descended to Bamford village, walked along the river Derwent and now was the time to ascent to Bamford Edge. But before we got there, we walked through Bamford forest.

The trees within this forest look so strange and we had a weird feeling passing through so I was wondering is this forest really haunted like people say?

I’m not sure if Bamford forest is haunted but it does look similar to the one from Lord of the Ring series.

The ascent is not very steep and it is definitely worth it.

The views from Bamford Edge towards Ladybower Reservoir and the other side to Hope Valley are picturesque.

If you don’t fancy walking through Bamford and just want to go to Bamford Edge, you can start from the same car park, ascend the hill and after 1 miles you will find these amazing views.

The hike is around 6.5 miles and it is quite easy with most of the route being tarmac or stoned paths.
