Mam Tor

Mam Tor, Peak District

The highest hill (517m) near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name means "mother hill", so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of "mini-hills" beneath it.

What a better way to spend your Sunday than going hiking in Peak District!

Mam Tor is very popular, touristic peak where sometimes there is a queue to get to the top. The route we have created for a wonderful Sunday morning was Mam Tor including Back Tor, Lose Hill and through Castleton to Cave Dale. The area around Cave Dale has appeared within one of House of the Dragon episodes. The scene was filmed within the valley with the view towards the old Castle.

We have parked at Mam Tor National Trust car park, a very busy car park with pay and display and payment by phone.

The walk to Mam Tor is quite steep but easily accessible and you will understand the meaning of ‘‘mother hill’’ when you get to the top where the view is beautiful.

The trail we did was not very hard and we often stopped to enjoy the nature beautiful views and reserve. I then realised there are so many amazing places at just few minutes away from my door step. If you ever feel like you want to escape from daily routine and stressful job, this is a great place where you can just breath the fresh air and relax. There is something about being surrounded by natures beauty that gives you energy and tranquillity. Stop for a second and just look around you, feel the wind and you can start your week feeling more positive.

Whenever I see ruins of old houses I get to think, why did they leave this wonderful place?

Would you like to give up the city, modern life and live there?
