Three Sisters

Highlands, Scotland

The "Three Sisters" also known as Bidean nam Bian Mountain in the Scottish Highlands is another magnificent place worth visiting near Glencoe.

The area is very popular full with walkers and visitor to see the iconic sceneries that appeared in movies like Skyfall or Harry Potter.

The route starts from a car park near A82 which is free of charge but can be busy as people sometimes stop there to take pictures or just to take a break and enjoy the views.

The most noticeable features of Bidean nam Bian are the famous Three Sisters of Glen Coe, three steeply-sided ridges that extend north into the Glen. Two of the sisters, Gearr Aonach (Short Ridge) and Aonach Dubh (Black Ridge) converge at Stob Coire nan Lochan. The final, most easterly sister, Beinn Fhada (Long Hill), joins the Bidean nam Bian massif at the summit of Stob Coire Sgreamhach.

Right after we started the walk we were ascending slowly by the River Coe. It was a hot summer day so walking by the river we were able to stop and wash our hands and face with cold water.

After just few miles of walking through the rocky steep terrain we have reached to the Hidden or Lost Valley. It has a wide flat area concealed from Glen Coe by the landslip which blocked the entrance and allowed a loch to form. The valley was used by Clan Macdonald to hide their livestock from raiders, or hide cattle they themselves had stolen. This steep rough path about 2.5 miles is very popular and involves river crossing and some sections with big rocks.

The next part of the route is upstream the river, gradually ascending on the right side on the river.

The entire valley and the mountains are so dramatic and impressive nothing compared to other mountains that we’ve hiked.

The water going down on the versants caused few land slips and created small streams where you can take water. We have used it to drink but using a life straw to filter the bacteria.

The next leg of the route is very steep and slippery on the gravel and rocky path. Having adequate boots and walking poles helps and it requires extra attention so the rocks falling down won’t hit anyone behind.

As soon as we reached the top the wind was cooling off the temperature and we have spotted the snow.

Once we reached to Bealach Dearg we have decided not to go to Stob Coire nan Lochan (1072m) and carry on to the left to Bidean nam Bian (1150m) the highest peak of the Three Sisters.

The climb is demanding and difficult but the views are spectacular.

After we played with some snow and carried on the the highest peak of this route.

Climbing a mountain like this one we feel so small and grateful to be able to get there and see the beautiful Highlands.

This route is definitely the most demanding, difficult but beautiful that we have done so far.

The ups and downs from one peak to the other makes the walk more challenging. We have done this hike in June but if we were to go earlier the path at the top could have been covered in snow and it would have been more dangerous.

The route is 6.4 miles and it took about 7 hours to complete including the multiple stops going up and lunch break.

I really enjoyed it and hopefully we will be able to go back there soon to explore other routes like Ring of Steal.
